Lissy's Friends

This week in second grade we read Lissy's Friends by Grace Lin. This is an adorable story about a girl named Lissy who "makes" friends by creating them with origami. After we read the story we moved to the tables and each student had the opportunity to create an origami project. This is such a fun story time that I repeat it with second grade every year!

Grace Lin Visit

Author and illustrator Grace Lin visited our school on Monday, March 23. Her first session was with K, 1st and 2nd grades and she read her cute book The Ugly Vegetables. She explained how the book was based on experiences that she had while she was growing up. Then she drew several large picures of a dog, a monkey, and a giraffe.

Her next session was for 3rd, 4th and 5th grades. Ms. Lin explained the process that she goes through to have one of her books published. There are many different people she works with such as an editor, art director, designer, and printer. She called students up to help her explain the role that each of these people play in the publishing process. After this Ms. Lin taught all of the students how to draw a dog like to one on the cover of her book How to Draw a Dog. She also told us about her new book Where the Mountain Meets the Moon that will be coming out this summer. Look for it next fall in the Taylor library!

Grace Lin is Coming!

Author and illustrator Grace Lin will be visiting our school on March 23, 2009. She has written many books for children including Year of the Dog, a 2008 Bluebonnet nominee. I have begun reading Ms. Lin's books to all students so they will be familiar with her books when she visits. There is a link to Ms. Lin's website on the right of my blog under author websites. Please watch the Thursday folders for the chance to buy Grace Lin books and have them personally autographed by her while she is here. I have seen her speak and I know everyone is going to love hearing her and watching her illustrate for us! She will be featuring her books Year of the Dog and The Ugly Vegetables during her visit with us.
