Poetry Fun

During the month of April we will be celebrating National Poetry Month. All this week in the library we have been reading poems from some wonderful poetry books. Students have learned where to look in the library to find the poetry ( the 800's). Starting Friday, April 10 through the end of the month we will be having a "lucky reader" contest in the library. Students who check out a book from the poetry section will have the chance to be a "lucky reader." Selected poetry books have been designated in our computer system , and the student that checks them out will hear the "bad beep" but it will actually tell them that they are a lucky reader. They will then get to choose a prize out of the prize basket. Choose a book of poetry and you may be a winner!

Fourth Grade Animal Research

Fourth grade was in the library at the end of March for a week of animal research. Each student chose four animals and read books and magazines to discover the habitat and adaptations for each animal. They then used the information they found to create illustrated flip books.

Grace Lin Visit

Author and illustrator Grace Lin visited our school on Monday, March 23. Her first session was with K, 1st and 2nd grades and she read her cute book The Ugly Vegetables. She explained how the book was based on experiences that she had while she was growing up. Then she drew several large picures of a dog, a monkey, and a giraffe.

Her next session was for 3rd, 4th and 5th grades. Ms. Lin explained the process that she goes through to have one of her books published. There are many different people she works with such as an editor, art director, designer, and printer. She called students up to help her explain the role that each of these people play in the publishing process. After this Ms. Lin taught all of the students how to draw a dog like to one on the cover of her book How to Draw a Dog. She also told us about her new book Where the Mountain Meets the Moon that will be coming out this summer. Look for it next fall in the Taylor library!
